GVR: The global image sensor market is expected to grow steadily by 2020.
The latest research report released by U.S. market research firm Grand View Research (hereinafter referred to as “GVR”) indicates that the global image sensor market is expected to grow steadily at a rate of 6.7% from 2014 to 2020.
The report predicts that by 2020, the global image sensor market is expected to reach US$12.028 billion. Image sensors are primarily used in camera phones and tablets, and as demand for these products continues to grow, the image sensor market will maintain rapid growth. In the coming years, demand for image sensors in industrial, automotive, and medical applications will also increase significantly.
As public attention to minimally invasive surgery continues to rise, medical applications will also rapidly drive growth in the image sensor market. The advancement of backside illumination technology is further boosting demand for CMOS image sensors. However, the unit price of image sensors is expected to continue declining. Due to issues such as high power consumption, CCD image sensors are set to shrink further in the global market.
The report “Image Sensors Market Analysis and Segment Forecasts to 2020” has been made publicly available to GVR users. Further analysis of the report reveals:
- Global shipments of image sensors totaled 1.798 billion units in 2012 and are projected to reach 3.009 billion units by 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.7% from 2014 to 2020.
- CMOS image sensors offer numerous advantages over CCD devices, including superior imaging quality. As a result, since 2012, CMOS image sensors have accounted for 83.2% of total market shipments, and their compound annual growth rate is projected to be 4.4% from 2014 to 2020.
- From 2014 to 2020, shipments of image sensors for medical applications will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.2%, making this the fastest-growing application segment.
- The Asia-Pacific region will become the largest and fastest-growing market for image sensors. In 2012, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 35.9% of global shipments, and it is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.4% from 2014 to 2020. This growth is largely driven by strong demand for consumer electronics in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to smartphones, the number of first-time buyers of products such as point-and-shoot cameras and digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras is also substantial, which will significantly boost the demand for image sensors.
- The world’s leading sensor suppliers include Sony, Aptina Imaging, OmniVision, Canon, STMicroelectronics, Teledyne DALSA, and Samsung Electronics, among others.
